Description

**THIS ITEM IS SOLD**

Presentation antique ice bucket, made by John Grinsell and Sons for the Trinity Boat Club Junior Trial Eights 1890. The crew includes at 4 RE Childers - see below.

This ice bucket is a rare antique made from silver plate and oak. The hallmark of cupid with the bow and arrow dates this piece exactly to 1879. The bucket has the original removable ceramic liner, which is marked with a cupid over the motto Semper Paratus. The silver plate is marked with a cupid in a shield, along with the model number 2727. Their factory was at Victoria Works, 57 Tower Street, St. George's and they also had showrooms in Charterhouse Street, olborn Circus, London and West Nile Street, Glasgow. Grinsells were also silversmiths but offered a large line of items that combined electro plated mounts on oak with ceramic liners. They termed the items British Oak Work. The silver plating has the copper colour showing through.

Robert Erskine Childers DSC (25 June 1870 – 24 November 1922), universally known as Erskine Childers, was an Irish writer, whose works included the influential novel The Riddle of the Sands, and an Irish nationalist who smuggled guns to Ireland in his sailing yacht Asgard. He was executed by the authorities of the nascent Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War. He was the son of British Orientalist scholar Robert Caesar Childers; the cousin of Hugh Childers and Robert Barton; and the father of the fourth President of Ireland, Erskine Hamilton Childers.
