RARE silver and gilt goblet London 1872 for Cambridge University 1 Mile Race 1872 Won By W H Fawkes (Relation of gunpowder plotter Guy Fawkes). Bright cut engraved with a guilloche border above with floral swags suspending rosettes, each enclosing an armorial and an inscription. Inscription reads "Cambridge University 1872, Athletic Club, Freashmans Sports, 1 Mile Race, Won By W.H. Fawkes St Johns Coll Time 4 Min 49 4/5 Sec." Plus the arms of Cambridge University. Gilt interrior. Makers initials "W.E" for William Edwards of London. Foot stamped to base with retailers mark "Munsey - Silversmith - Cambridge." Measures 14.8cm in height.
Wilmot Hawksworth Fawkes joined the Royal Navy in 1860 and by 1867 had become a Lieutenant. He served mainly in the Mediterranean on HMS Prince Consort and Research. In 1872 he matriculated at St John's College, Cambridge but did not graduate. In 1880 he was promoted to Commander and served on HMS Northampton on the North America and West Indies station. After a few years he returned to England to command of the Royal Yacht Osborne, a post he held for two years.
Promoted Captain in 1886, he was given command of HMS Raleigh before going on to be Naval Advisor to the Inspector General of Fortifications in 1891. He then took command of HMS Mercury on the China station returning to England in 1897 to be Private Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty in 1897. On 1 January 1899 he was appointed an Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria. He was appointed in command of the new battleship HMS Canopus which he commissioned in December 1899 for service in the Mediterranean Fleet, but in late 1900 was back in England as Private Secretary to Lord Selborne, First Lord of the Admiralty. Promoted to rear admiral on 1 January 1901,he was invested as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) by King Edward VII on 11 August 1902 for his part in organizing the fleet review held at Spithead on 16 August 1902 for the coronation of the King. In October 1902 he was appointed in command of the Cruiser Squadron He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Australia Station in 1905, became Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth in 1908 and retired in 1911.

Three bronze Far & Sure 'Amateur Scottish Golf Championship Semi Finalist" medals awarded to Stewart in 1909, 1912 & 1913. The rims of two engraved 'Presented by the Proprietors of the Dundee Evening Telegraph.' In 1909 Robert Maxwell was champion and in 1913 the championship was held at Royal Montrose.
A silver medal for 'Eden Course Tournament' played over the world famous St Andrews links engraved to 'D.M.Stewart' Birmingham 1923. First played nearly 100 years ago in 1919, the Eden Tournament for gentleman golfers became one of the most important events in the Scottish calendar and has remained a popular amateur event for many local and visiting golfers to St Andrews.

We believe that £9.95 represents great value giving you access a global community of sports memorabilia and other collectors of high quality items.
Payment of the fee enables you to bid on, buy and list items for auction or for sale.
2. Get to see memorabilia at least 48 hours before it is listed on the Sportbilia.com website and be offered first refusal on great items of memorabilia.
We are delighted to offer a Premium Annual Fee service for an annual payment of £49.95. This service provides you with the option to purchase great items of memorabilia at leaset 48 hours before it is listed on the Sportbilia.com website.
PLUS we will proactively seek to acquire specific items of memorabilia for you from a maximum of 10 items. You are not obliged to purchase any items we offer to you on your list but you will have first refusal on any items we do offer to you. Of course we can't guarantee that we will find items to offer you from your list but we do have a global network seeking the best items of memorabilia available.
The Premium Annual Fee starts on 1st January and ends on 31st December regardless of when the fee is paid.

We're delighted to announce the re-launch of the specialist sports memorabilia website Sportbilia.com. Launched in 2004 the Sportbilia website has been completely redesigned and lots of new features added including having your own on-line store. Once registered, members can list items of sporting memorabilia either for sale by auction or at a fixed "buy it now" price. Members can even list items they are looking for to add to their collections.
