Introduction to selling on Sportbilia

Why should I sell my sports memorabilia on Sportbilia?
There are many really good reasons why Sportbilia is the best place for you to sell your sports memorabilia:

More buyers will be looking at your items

Throughout the year we let thousands of sports memorabilia collectors, dealers, memorabilia society members, antique dealers, sporting museums and many, many more potential buyers from around the world know when our auctions are. Thousands of potential buyers will know exactly when and where to look for their next purchase so you have every chance of achieving a successful sale. We have some of the world’s biggest sports memorabilia buyers on our database.

Compare this to some on-line auctions where lots of sports memorabilia, including yours maybe, often goes unnoticed by potential buyers because they simply don’t have the time to spend day after day searching just “in-case” something turns up. With Sportbilia buyers know exactly when and where to look for the best in sports memorabilia.

Better chance of achieving the best price for your memorabilia

With Sportbilia buyers know exactly when and where to look for their next purchase so you will have every chance of achieving the best possible price for your memorabilia.

Compare this to other on-line auctions where lots of sports memorabilia sells for far less than its true value because potential buyers have simply “missed it”. With Sportbilia there’s far less chance of this happening.

Buyers pay only a low buying fee

At Sportbilia buyers only pay a low buying fee. Many buyers take into account the cost of the auctioneers commission fee when they decide what their maximum bid will be. What this means is that if, for example, an item has a market value of £100 and the auctioneer charges 15% plus VAT the maximum the bidder is likely to bid up to is £85. With Sportbilia the buyer pays only a low fee of 10% on the final bid price so is likely to bid up to £90. So you could get another £5 in your pocket.

Our sellers’ fees are very low

Because we are collectors of sports memorabilia ourselves we know how “painful” it is to pay auction fees so we are determined to make Sportbilia's fees as low as possible. The result is our seller’s fee in 99% of cases will be lower than charged by eBay. With all the additional benefits Sportbilia offers you we believe our seller’s fee represent excellent value for your money. See how Sportbilia compares to eBay.

List your items from anywhere in the world

You’re in control when you list your item with Sportbilia. No waiting months for a once or twice yearly traditional live sale or other internet auctions. With Sportbilia you get eleven auctions per year. You could be selling items for eleven months of the year. Also, there's no transporting your items to sell at live auctions miles away and usually weeks in advance of the sale.

More buyers for your item

Buyers can bid on your items from anywhere in the world, there’s no need for them to travel to view items, they see your images and description and can contact you direct!

Build and promote your reputation as a trusted seller

The Sportbilia feedback system enables you to build your reputation as a trusted seller. With live auctions and some online auction buyers don’t know who the seller is and so can’t build up a reputation. A great reputation usually means higher prices achieved and more items sold.

Buy an item of memorabilia one day and sell again within a matter of days

Because Sportbilia have an auction and fixed price sale every month (except for August) it is quite possible for you to acquire an item of memorabilia and sell it within a matter of days. This will help smooth your cash flow if you are buying and selling regularly.

Sportbilia will become trusted and respected the world over

Sportbilia aims to become not only the world’s number one place for buying, selling, swapping and collecting sports memorabilia but also one of the leading sources of information on all aspects of sports memorabilia. A trusted and respected member of the world’s sporting memorabilia community.

What ways are there of selling my memorabilia?
There are two ways of selling your memorabilia on Sportbilia. The first is to list items for auction and the second, is to offer items for sale at a fixed price.

If you don’t want to sell your memorabilia you can offer it as a swap.

Selling by Auction

How do I sell by auction?
Selling your sporting memorabilia by auction with Sportbilia is really simple, can be very rewarding and some of the best fun you can have! Just follow these four steps:

Step One

Register
In order to list items for auction you first need to register with Sportbilia. To become a registered user is quick and simple.

If you have already registered on Sportbilia you can move to Step Two

To register is really easy, quick and FREE*. Click here or the “Register” button found on the left hand side column of buttons and complete the registration form.

During the registration process you will be asked to provide a valid email address and a credit or debit card details. Providing your credit or debit card details contribute to the verification process (you will NOT be charged*). Verification helps us to keep buying and selling on Sportbilia a pleasurable and safe experience for everyone. Verifying sellers helps prevent fraudulent selling, such as sellers listing memorabilia they don’t have, receiving payment and then disappearing.

You also need to create a Username, which will be become your identity or ID on Sportbilia, and a password. We recommend that both your username and password are not ones that you may be using on other internet sites.

Once you've completed the registration form you will receive a confirmation email from Sportbilia to the email address you submitted during the registration process. Simply follow the instructions contained in the email to complete your registration.

Please allow at least 24 hours between registering and listing items in the auction or the Market Place. We aim to complete your registration within 24 hours but can’t guarantee this. So if you want to list an item please register as soon as possible, leave it late and you could miss the deadlines for listing items for auction.

* Please note that registering with Sportbilia free if:
1. You are a member of a recognised sports memorabilia or collectors society {link to list of recognised societies on Sports Memorabilia Services page); or
2. If you have, at the time of registering,  over 20+ feedbacks of which 99+% are positive with another online auction site, or
3. You are being recommended by an existing Sportbilia registered user who has been registered for a minimum of three months.

You will be asked to give details of either membership, feedback history or the ID of the member recommending you during the registration process.

Even if you are unable to make use of one of the ways of registering outlined above you are still very welcome to register with Sportbilia. If this is the case, you will be asked during the registration process to make a payment of £4.95 to enable us to provide verification. The £4.95 will be credited to your Sportbilia account and any seller’s fees you incur will be taken from this credit until it is exhausted. We credit you with the whole £4.95 even though we will not have received this amount after the online payment processor, such as Paypal, has taken its fees. So, even if you pay the £4.95 verification fee, after you list a few items, it should still cost nothing to join! We hope that this demonstrates that we are not interested in generating income through this payment rather we are trying to ensure we have a safe and friendly site for all to use.

Step Two
If you have chosen to sell by auction your item will be listed when the next auction starts. The start and closing dates of the next auction are automatically generated as you list your item. The listing of items for auction is only possible in the listing periods. All Sportbilia begin on the first Thursday of each month (no auction in August) and close on a Sunday ten days later.

Buyers will be viewing your item before the auction starts so the earlier you list your item the more people are likely to see it.

You set the start time of your auction by choosing a time between 11am to 11pm British Summer Time (BST). If you are listing a number of items we recommend you spread your start times out to avoiding “bunching” and give buyers a chance to bid on all your items in the last few minutes before each ends.

You may also want to consider World Time Zones and the local time your auctions will be ending in the countries your customers live in. For example, a start and end time of 2pm BST will mean an end time of 12 midnight in most of Australia as they are ten hours ahead of BST. If Australia is where your customers are we would recommend either an 11am start to end at 9pm on Sunday or an 11pm start to end at 9am on Monday.

To list your item for auction either click on “Sell” in the menu at the top left of each page. Simply follow the instructions to list your item.

You will be asked which sports category and subcategory you want to list your item under. The second step is entering the item details and payment methods accepted. You can also include up to six images of your item. You can choose start price or whether to set a reserve price and set the postage and packaging cost. Clicking on the “Next Step” button, you will be able to review the auction before submitting. If everything is in order, you can click on the “Submit” button, and the auction is activated.

Step Three
Manage your sale by responding promptly to any questions buyers ask.
Step Four
If your auction has been successful it’s time to contact your buyer. Let the buyer know the total price of the item, including your postage and packaging costs, and how they can pay you. After you have received and cleared payment, package the item well and post it to the buyer. It’s a good idea to include a note to the buyer asking them to let you know when they receive the item.

That’s it!

What is the cost of selling by auction?

If you list an item in the Sportbilia auction we charge from as little as 50p for each of the items you list with no additional costs for images, reserves and so on. The listing fee is paid if your item does or does not sell.

How long will my auction listing run for?
All items listed in the auction run for 10 days from the same start date to the same end date.

What is a reserve?
A reserve price is the minimum price you are willing to accept for your item. Buyers are not shown the reserve price, only whether the reserve price has been met or not. The winning bidder must meet or exceed the reserve price and have the highest bid.

What if my reserve price has not been reached?
If your reserve price has not been reached you are under no obligation to sell your item.

How are the bid increments in the auction determined?
The bid increments in the auction are set automatically by our auction system. For example, the bid increments are small for an item with a low starting price and become larger as the price of the item goes higher.

How do I get in contact with my buyer?
When your listing is over, it's time to get in touch with your winning bidder. You'll need to email your buyer to exchange information. The buyer's email address will be provided in the email announcing the end of your listing. You can also access the Buyer's email address via the View Item listing page.

Ask the buyer to:

Confirm the address they'd like the item posted to Tell the buyer:

  • The postage cost

  • How you will post the item to them

  • When to expect it

  • Which payment options you accept

  • The total price

  • Remember to be friendly

What if the email bounces?
Sometimes emails will bounce back. If this happens to you check that there are no errors in the email address and try again. If the email bounces back again, you should try and telephone them. Please be patient, they might be having problems with their email address.

What if my buyer doesn't respond?
If you do not hear from your buyer, don't immediately assume the worse. It is possible that they are having email problems or are away for a few days. As a first step send a second friendly email. If you are still unsuccessful you should consider contacting the buyer by telephone.

What if I am still unsuccessful?
You should consider filing a Non-Paying bidder or buyer report. For more details, clickhere .

What do I do if my item doesn’t sell?
If your item doesn’t sell you can re-list for a second time without paying your listing fee again. If your item doesn’t sell for a third time and you re-list the standard fees will apply. Hopefully your re-listed item will sell and here are some tips to help you:

Item title and description
Consider changing your item title and description.
Some buyers start by scanning the titles so make yours eye-catching. Successful titles are descriptive and exciting.

Photographs
Buyers want to see what they are bidding on or buying so consider adding more photographs. Remember that potential bidders and buyers can not inspect your item in person so will rely on the photographs and description. Check the quality of your photographs and retake any that could be improved such as those that are not quite in focus blurred or are not well lit.

Price
Consider a lower starting price to encourage bidders or lower your reserve price if one has been set.

Change the category
Search for items like yours and see where other users are listing them. If necessary list your item in a different category. Also, consider selling either via the auction or at a fixed price in the Market Place.

Search for the same or similar listings
See if the same or similar items to yours have been listed and take note of anything you think would improve your listing. See what the other listing sells for.

How do I report a non-paying bidder or buyer?
The possibility exists that a bidder or buyer does not complete the sale on an auction they have won. If this occurs, you have the option to request a credit on your listing fee. Requests for credit can be made any time from 21 to 60 days after the disputed auction ends.

Before you submit a request for a listing fee credit
Please make every attempt to contact the buyer and complete the sale. Also, please allow three weeks to account for buyer unavailability e.g. holiday, sickness or technical problems. If a buyer formally backs out of a sale or you receive no communication after three weeks you can request a listing fee credit.

How to request a listing fee credit
Email us at nonpayer@sportbilia.com with the following information:

Your username
Item reference number
Bidder’s username
Proof of inability to complete the sale*

*Proof can include

Is there any incentive available for volume selling?
Not at the moment although there will be very shortly called the “Top Dog” sellers programme aimed at rewarding those users who list either large numbers of or high value items for sale on the site.

Will it cost anything to join the Top Dog Programme?
There is no cost to join the Top Dog programme. Membership is FREE.
Who will be eligible to become a Top Dog?

  • Uphold the Sportbilia values, including honesty and mutual respect
  • Average a minimum of £750 in sales or 100 sold items per month, for three consecutive months
  • Achieve an overall feedback rating of 100, of which 99% or more is positive
  • Have been an active member for 90 days
  • Have an account in good financial standing
  • Not violate any Sportbilia policies in a 60-day period
  • Maintain a minimum of 4 average monthly listings for the past 3 months
How will I maintain my Top Dog status?
The Top Dog programme eligibility is reviewed every month. To remain a Top Dog seller users must:

What happens if I do not maintain my Top Dog status?
If you fall below the Top Dog criteria, you will receive an alert via email. You will have 30 days to get back into compliance. During this time, please feel free to contact us -- we can provide tips to help you maintain your Top Dog status. If, after the 30-day period, your still fall below the criteria, your status as a Top Dog will be withdrawn. Please note that this won't prevent you from achieving Top Dog status in the future.
How will I add the Top Dog logo to my listings?
The Top Dog logo next to your user ID can show buyers that you are an experienced seller. We recommend you display it with pride!

Is there a checklist I can use for selling my memorabilia?
Yes, we have put together a checklist to make listing your item of memorabilia both easy and effective. Here’s our “seller’s checklist:”

Register
To sell your memorabilia on Sportbilia you must register as a user. As a registered user you are not only able to sell on Sportbilia but also list items you would like to swap, would like to acquire and gives you access to the sports memorabilia database

Check the Auction and Listing Dates
There are set times during each calendar month when it’s possible to list items for auction. Listing for each auction closes 24 hours before the start of the live auction. Listing items for sale at a fixed price is possible anytime.

List your item(s) as soon as possible in the listing period before each auction (link to auction and listing dates). This will mean that your item is available for viewing by potential bidders for the greatest amount of time before and then during the auction.

Check that your memorabilia is permitted to be sold on Sportbilia
The only items to be listed for sale on Sportbilia are items of sporting or sporting related memorabilia. No other items will be allowed to be listed on Sportbilia.

Register for an on-line account
On-line accounts such as Paypal provide fast, easy and secure ways to accept payment from buyers.

Choose your selling format
You can sell your item through an auction-style format, or at a fixed-price.

Choose the right category and price
Help buyers find your item quickly by listing in the most appropriate sports category, or categories. Search for items of sports memorabilia similar to yours and see which categories other sellers have chosen and at what price they have listed at. This will help you set the most competitive price for your item. For an additional fee, you can list your item in a second category. Click here for a full list of the sports categories.

Plan your item title and description
Effective item title
Identify the most appealing characteristics of your item and think about what words buyers might use to search for it. An effective item title is the most important thing a seller can do to attract more buyers. Many buyers use the Sportbilia search facility so use words you think that they would use to find your item and remember to check that they are spelt correctly.

Item description
Generally the more detail you put into your description the more confidence you’ll inspire in your bidders and buyers. Clearly state any policies you have, such as

Please avoid the temptation to “over” describe your item or fail to mention defects. It is very disappointing and can lead to disputes when an item arrives and has been misdescribed by the User.
If you forget something in the description, you can add to your items description using the Edit function in your My Sportbilia.

Listing enhancements
We want everyone to have the same chance of selling their items so no listing enhancements are available i.e. no bold, no featuring and no highlighting.

Take quality photographs
All listings on Sportbilia have a gallery image and up to 6 images per listing at no extra cost. Take a good quality photograph of your item in an appropriate digital format. Read our tips on, “How to create great photographs of your memorabilia”

Listing your memorabilia
Having made your decision to sell your memorabilia either via auction or at a fixed price in the Market Place you now need to list your item. This is an easy and quick process. Simply go to the “Sell” page and click on “sell by auction” or “sell by fixed price” and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Starting price

  • This is the price that you select for bidding on your item to start at and is the lowest price you will take for your item (unless you use the reserve price function).
  • If set too high this may put off bidders. Try a low opening start price and no reserve for your auction listings. This invariably increases bidding activity and attracts other potential bidders.

    Postage and packaging
Make postage and packing costs, and the locations you're willing to dispatch the item to, clear when filling out the

After sales service
Building a reputation as a trusted and valued seller will help your future sales and trading. In addition to accurate descriptions, great quality photographs, adopting a service culture and buyer friendly policies you can also:

  • Include a thank you note in with the item you send to the buyer;
  • In the thank you note ask the buyer to leave positive feedback if they are happy with the item or to get in touch with you if they are not happy to give you an opportunity to address their issues;
  • Keep in contact with buyers to learn more about what they are looking to purchase in the future and to keep them informed about you’re collection and what you intending to buy; and
  • If you are left negative feedback reply to it in a professional manner as an angry response could put off other buyers.
How do I list more than one item?
You are able to list more than one item at a time using the Sportbilia bulk loader accessed in My Sportbilia. This is a basic bulk loader and we are currently developing an improved version.

How do I create high quality photographs for my listings?

A high quality photograph of your item of sports memorabilia is worth a thousand words of description. To attract as many bids or buyers as possible and gain the highest selling price follow these steps:

Step 1: Choose your equipment
What equipment can you use to create a digital photograph of your item?
  • Digital camera—a digital camera lets you take a picture of your item and immediately have it in digital format, ready to edit with your computer. Your digital camera will come with instructions on how to transfer (upload) photos to your computer.
  • Regular camera and scanner—take a picture with a film camera, have it developed, and then use a scanner to convert your picture into an electronic image. You may be able to place small, flat items like programmes, ticket stubs, etc directly in your scanner (and not need a camera).

Note: Many copy centres can do the scanning for you.

Step 2: Create a great photograph
Here are some tips for taking high quality photographs that will make your item of sports memorabilia look its best and give bidders and buyers the confidence they need to buy:

  • To help ensure that the detail is clear light your memorabilia thoroughly. We find natural, outdoor lighting best or if indoors use at least two light sources.
  • Consider a backdrop. If appropriate, consider using a plain, coloured fabric backdrop to make your memorabilia stand out. Don't use pure white, as it tends to create too much contrast in your photo. If you don't use a backdrop, be sure to move other things out of the way so your item will really stand out.
  • Get close. Users want to see detail, so really make your memorabilia take up the whole frame. Consider taking a close-up of a section of the item in addition to the entire object in order to give users a better idea of the item's actual condition. If taking a photo of a golf ball, for example, be sure to photograph both sides of the ball and a close up of any markings on the poles.

Edit Your Photo
Once your photo is on your computer hard-drive, you can often improve it with photo editing software, which may have come with your digital camera or scanner.
Tips:

  • Remove unnecessary background;
  • Balance the contrast and brightness; and
  • Save your edited photograph as a JPEG (.jpg) file (file types other than JPEG and GIF should not be used).

Step 3: Use your photograph for your Sportbilia listing
When you list your item of memorabilia for sale Sportbilia keeps and displays your photos for the length of the auction. You can use up to six photographs free of charge for each of your listed items.

Please note that copying photographs without the owner’s permission is illegal and can lead to suspension from Sportbilia.

Manage Your Listings

How can I track my listings?
You can keep track of all your listings in My Sportbilia.

Can I end a listing early? e Marketplace one of the following must apply:
1. since being listed the item has been damaged or lost
2. the item was significantly misdescribed
3. the starting or reserve price were incorrect
We do closely monitor all listings that are ended early. Whilst we will look at all listings ended early sympathetically, the early ending of a listing to circumvent payment of fees will not be tolerated.
